Dear Members of the Bishop McDevitt Community:
After an intensive search led by Bishop McDevitt’s Board of Directors in close collaboration with administrators from the Office of Catholic Education and Faith in the Future, it is my great joy to announce that Dr. Matthew T. Powell has been selected as the new president of Bishop McDevitt High School effective July 1, 2017.
Dr. Powell will succeed Mr. Stephen Finley, Class of ’69, who has faithfully and honorably served as the school’s president since 2012. Earlier this year, Mr. Finley announced his plans to retire with the conclusion of the 2016-2017 school year. Please join me in extending prayerful best wishes to both Mr. Finley and Dr. Powell during this time of transition.
Dr. Powell joins Bishop McDevitt from NeighborWorks America, headquartered in Washington, D.C., where he served as a director. There, he created, implemented, and managed community development organizations throughout the country. He also assisted in building an infrastructure that earned the trust of the United States Congress as well as financial institutions, local governments, and non-profit organizations. Dr. Powell was primarily responsible for managing budget oversight, internal and external reporting, as well as other administrative duties. Over the past two decades, he has been engaged in education, working with and supporting academic institutions, strategic planning, budget development, community engagement, and oversight. He has spent the greater part of his career working to support institutional development at mission-centered organizations devoted to transforming our world for the better.
Dr. Powell earned his Doctorate in Philosophy in Religious Studies from Marquette University, a Masters of Arts from New York University, a teaching certification from John Carroll University, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame.
I extend my sincere gratitude to the interview committee and all who helped to bring this process to a successful conclusion. Collaboration is a core value in our organization. Moments such as these clearly reflect how important the joint work of the local board, the Office of Catholic Education, and Faith in the Future has become in creating successful schools. We believe that Dr. Powell, along with current administrators at Bishop McDevitt, are laser focused on equipping saints for life.
May the Lord bless you and your families as we continue to celebrate the joy of the Easter Season!
Peace and all good things,
COO and Secretary for Education
