Bishop McDevitt High School alumnus Steve
Sheehan, '66 competed in and finished the 2004 Boston Marathon.
Steve is seen here showing his "true colors" during the event.
It was said that because Steve didn't have his name written on his
arm, like runners in the marathon often do, people instead cheered,
"Go McDevitt!"
In order to qualify for the Marathon,
Steve ran the Philadelphia Distance run in September 2003 and the
Philadelphia Marathon in November 2003 with a qualifying time of 3
hrs and 43 minutes. He trained running through Abington,
Glenside, Erdenheim, Flourtown, Chestnut Hill and Valley Green.
The Boston Marathon is 24 miles and
Steve ran this in 4 hrs and 35 minutes in 86 degree heat. He
placed 12,095 out of 21,000 registered of whom 16,000 finished and
of that number 1,000 required medical attention and 140 more were
hospitalized.
Steve's parents came from Florida and
joined his brother Michael to watch him cross the finish line.
This was a life long goal for Steve and he said, "I did it and I'll
never do it again" -- Look for Steve with Tiger now!!
