Opening Day
Monday ~ January 30, 2006

Catholic Schools' week opened with a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit.  Father Thomas Mullelly, a Bishop McDevitt alumnus, is Director of the Aquinas Institute at Princeton University.  All alumni priests, Religious brothers and sisters were invited to attend!  During the liturgy, the faculty expressed their commitment to Catholic Education.

Colloquium ~ 1 P.M. to 8 P.M.

A colloquium of high schools focused on Pope John Paul II's encyclical, Evangelium Vitae - "The Gospel of Life".  Invitations were sent to 38 Archdiocesan and Private Catholic Secondary Schools within the Archdiocese.  Click here for a letter from Bishop McDevitt's Principal.

Dr. Robert P. George, the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University gave the keynote address.  The conference had three discussion sessions treating different aspects of the encyclical.  Click here for the day's schedule.

Inside the Passion

Author, Father John Bartunek, of the book "Inside the Passion" (left) spoke to the McDevitt community and guests.  His book is a guide to the film "The Passion of Christ" created and directed by actor Mel Gibson.  Mel Gibson wrote the foreword to Father Bartunek's book.  Father offers much insight not only to the understanding of the movie but also to the meaning of Christ's passion from a spiritual and historical perspective

"Apostle of Common Sense"

Dale Ahlquist, author of "Apostle of Common Sense", spoke about G.K. Chesterton one of the most well-known and beloved writers of his time.  Juniors and Seniors were invited to an assembly with the author.  Underclassmen viewed a videotape in their homerooms on G.K. Chesterton.

Sponsored by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, a mass for all athletes in the Archdiocese was celebrated at the Cathedral-Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul.  75 of our Student Athletes from Bishop McDevitt attended the liturgy!

The Red Cross and Katrina

Mr. Tom Foley, Bishop McDevitt alumnus, is the CEO of the Red Cross' Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter.  Mr. Foley spoke to the student body about the Red Cross and their response to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. 

The faculty of McDevitt has adopted a "sister" school in New Orleans.  St. Edward the Confessor is one of the many institutions in need.  The faculty sent gift certificates to the teachers of St. Edward's for the Christmas holidays.  During the day, Bishop McDevitt students corresponded with the students of St. Edward's wishing them blessings and good will.
