Automatic External Defibrillators

Three Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) are now available at Bishop McDevitt High School in designated areas in case of an emergency requiring their use. One will be readily available to athletes practicing or playing on the premises.

There is an AED in the lobby of the school and on the third floor. They are available to anyone in the building who may need it. The AED is self-directed and can be used by untrained individuals. However, McDevitt’s administration and staff, faculty and coaches have received training.

The project was initiated by the Tuffy family. On May 1, 1999, the Bishop McDevitt High School community mourned the death of Jennifer Tuffy, a McDevitt senior and member of the Track Team. She succumbed after being on life support at Abington Hospital following her collapse in McDevitt's parking lot while at track practice. The cause of her death was a congenital heart condition that Jen had, of which her family was not aware. The emergency efforts immediately available at the time could not save her. However, her family felt that if a defibrillator had been used, Jen would have had a chance.

As time passed, they requested that donations being made to a Memorial Scholarship, which was established at the time of her death, be used to purchase the AEDs.
