Textbook:  Geometry. Bass, Charles, Johnson, & Kennedy. Prentice Hall, 2004. (Texts must be covered).

CD: Interactive online textbook also distributed.

Content: This is a Mathematics course primarily for 11^th graders that covers important topics in Geometry and Trigonometry. Students will also be exposed to Pre-Calculus and a review of important Algebra skills. Emphasis will also be placed on graphing calculator skills.

Goals

• To teach both Geometry and Trigonometry

• To emphasize skills and problem-solving techniques needed for higher SAT scores.

• To engage students in the use of current technology, such as graphing calculators,

• Math Websites, and computer skills.

• To improve critical thinking skills.

• To develop social skills and maturity through group work and accountability.

Grading

Student grades are calculated based on a point system. Points are awarded based on:

• major test and quizzes

• quarterly tests, projects, or semester exams

• homework

• group work and class work

• participation and preparedness

•  

Required Materials

Students are required to bring to class their covered textbook, notebook, pen or pencil, and graphing calculator (TI 83 Plus).

Repeated incidents of unpreparedness will result in a deduction of points from the quarterly grade. Notebooks may be evaluated periodically.

Homework 

Homework is assigned daily in order to reinforce learning.  Problems require extensive practice. Notebooks should be used for homework, and students are encouraged to put question marks next to problems that they do not understand.  Points are given for attempted practice on problems, not necessarily correct answers.

Class Work

Class time will be used for new instruction, group problem-solving work, and student understanding of prior problems. Time will also be scheduled for computer room labs in SAT work and calculator techniques. Students are expected to be on target with the class at all times.

Group work

Group time is crucial in Math in order for students to help each other with the many problems in the text. Groups may also be graded on problems or projects. Students are expected to behave in a professional and courteous manner when working with others.

Testing Days

Math test days are 1 or 4. Major tests are announced in advance. Absent students are expected to test upon return to school unless arrangements are made with the teacher in cases of prolonged absences.

Absences

Students who are not present for class are expected to makeup the material as soon as possible. Students with prolonged absences should see the teacher to arrange a time span to makeup missed tests or work.

Classroom Behavior

Students are expected to behave in a professional and Christian manner, showing respect to all. Notes should be taken in class, and students are expected to be on target with the group. Misbehavior, inattentiveness, cursing, and disrespect will not be tolerated. Demerits, detentions, or parental contact will occur if behavior is unacceptable.

Tutoring

Students are encouraged to seek help when needed. Many problems can be cleared up during class. Help is available from the teacher, and students can be paired with tutors for help outside class. I run an informal tutoring match-up service among students. The Academic Office also provides senior tutors (Honor Society students). Forms are available in Mr. Achuff’s office.
