JOHN CHURCH recently retired as the president of Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne, PA. Prior to his service at Valley Forge, he was an Assistant Professor of English and Communication at Immaculata University. John retired as a colonel in the Marine Reserves. His final post was as commander of 3d Civil Affairs Group in Great Lakes, IL. John served in Okinawa, Japan, Mogadishu, Somalia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, Headquarters, U. S. Marine Corps in Washington, D.C., Kosovo, Iraq, Liberia and Afghanistan. John also taught at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, the U. S. Naval War College, George Mason University, Temple University, Rosemont College, Holy Family University and at Valley Forge Military College where he led the charge to accept women at the college.
John earned a M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U. S. Naval War College, a M.A. in Communication Journalism and Public Affairs from American University in Washington, D.C. and a B.S. in Political Science from the U.S. Naval Academy. He is a doctoral student in Mass Media and Communication at Temple University. John and his wife Mary Kay, a retired Marine major, are the proud parents of John Carl III (“JC”), Travis Joseph, Cathryn Harper and Claire Ripley.
Father Christopher M. Walsh
Pastor, St. Raymond of Penafort Church, Philadelphia
Chaplain, Bishop McDevitt High School, Wyncote
Father Chris Walsh has been the Pastor of St. Raymond of Penafort Church in Northwest Philadelphia since 2008 and was named Chaplain of Bishop McDevitt High School in 2018. Prior to St. Raymond he was the School Minister at Archbishop Wood High School, Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Ransom, and spent many years working with St. Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in the South Bronx of New York City. Raised in Chester County, he is a graduate of Bishop Shanahan High School and Temple University. He worked in mental health with the Devereux Foundation for three years prior to entering St. Charles Boromeo Seminary. Father Chris was ordained a Deacon in 1998 and a Priest in 1999. He received training in the Spiritual Exercises at the Jesuit Center at Wernersville and has preached retreats and days of recollection throughout the country. In addition to his parish duties, Father Chris is blessed to serve with the Catholic Leadership Institute providing Leadership Training to parish leaders across the country; he is currently Chairman of the Board of the Pro-Life Union of Greater Philadelphia and actively participates in missionary work in Central Uganda
James Williams ‘92
Director of Institutional Advancement
James Williams is a Philadelphia native and a Bishop McDevitt High School alum. He went on to graduate from Cabrini College with a Bachelor’s degree in History. After graduation he was named Head T&F Coach at Gwynedd Mercy University. He later went on to coach at West Chester University, Cabrini College, and Cheyney University. At West Chester, he was also in charge of all aspects of operations for a twenty-three sports, eight-week program grossing over $700,000 annually. And during his stint at Cheyney University, he was elected President of Cheyney’s chapter of the APSCUF Coaches Union.
In 2015, he was appointed to the Office of City Councilman David Oh, in which he was responsible for: constituent services, planning and securing funding for special events, working with community stakeholders and religious organizations. In 2017, he served as the Campaign Manager for Beth Grossman who ran for District Attorney of Philadelphia in 2017.
Michael Watkins ‘99
Director of Student Activities & Athletics/ Head Football Coach
Mike has been the Head Football Coach at Bishop McDevitt since 2016 and was recently named as the Director of Student Activities & Athletics in July 2018. Prior to Bishop McDevitt, Mike was a Project Manager and a Regional Sales Manager. His responsibilities included overseeing and managing the sales and service for a variety of heat transfer solutions in the HVAC, Marine and Power industries. Mike grew up in Oreland, PA as a member of Holy Martyrs Parish, and attended Bishop McDevitt High School. Mike graduated from Kean University in 2006 with a B.A. in Recreation Administration with a Concentration in Sports Management. After graduating from Kean University, Mike worked as a Strength & Conditioning Coach for TEST Sports Clubs, Summit Sports Training Center and St. Joseph’s University.
